Farm: Coffee was first cultivated in China in the late 1800s on a small scale, introduced by French missionaries in Yunnan. But the production at scale didn’t take off for nearly 100 years, and only until 1988, coffee began to be commercially produced for export through companies such as Nestle.
Today, we can enjoy coffees produced carefully by local farmers and Aqi Badu is one of them. These beans are harvested in the Bank Farm, thanks to the tireless work of Yunnan Coffee Traders (YCT). The focus on specialty is relatively recent, with the past decade seeing smaller coffee producers improving their knowledge and skills. The coffee in your hands is an example of the progress achieved, with beans that showcase unusual buzzy notes with a caramelly finish.
The people of Yunnan are a hugely diverse mix of cultures and languages, with most of China’s officially recognised 56 different ethnic groups residing there. The region boasts a vast array of flora and fauna (including elephants and tigers), snow-capped mountains, deep valleys, subtropical jungles, beautiful lakes and majestic rivers.
